Students
examine 4 major parts of the Catechism of the Catholic Church
in greater detail. Each unit gives students the opportunity
to have thoughtful discussions and participate in a variety
of activities - an environment that where students are free
to share their views and understanding of the Catholic Church.
Liturgy
Students learn about the sacraments of belonging and healing.
Students come to a better understanding of the Nicene
Creed (what we believe), worship, sacraments, morality and
Christian Prayer.
Using the "Faith First" Series, students also have the
opportunity to learn about the history of the Catholic Church
and come to know how Christians can serve others.
Fifth
Graders begin the math curriculum with reviewing and building
upon prior concepts of adding and subtracting with and without
decimals; multiplying with multiple digits; dividing with
and without decimals; fractions; ratios; and geometry. Throughout
the year, these math concepts are built upon in problem-solving
skills.
Concepts of language development from previous grades
are expanded upon through more extensive exposure to literature,
grammar, vocabulary, spelling and composition.
To improve writing styles, fifth grade students engage
in peer editing and self-editing.
Students use both textbooks and trade (chapter) books
for reading assignments.
With pre-reading activities and throughout coverage of
a book, students are encouraged to build a more extensive
vocabulary, strengthen comprehension and enhance their own
reading selections.
Post-reading activities emphasize comprehension and how
stories relate to one another.
Main focus is on the Untied States history, with study
spanning the periods of the earliest inhabitants who were
native to our land thousands of years ago through the Civil
War years.
Independent and small group projects enhance the curriculum
and build an understanding of cooperation and teamwork.
The year begins with a review of the metric system followed
by study of Mixtures and Solutions (pre-chemical science).
Models and Designs are the next unit of study
The third unit involves the study of Levers and Pulleys
(physical science).
"The fifth grade program uses the Foss Science Program
which gives students the opportunity for "hands-on" learning
and exploratory projects, allowing them to design some of
their own activities."
