To
achieve our literacy goals, we meet in guided reading
groups with books selected to meet each learner's needs;
we are currently using the Rigby series. The students
also work in literacy workstations that help reinforce
language and reading skills.
Students
bring together all of the Language Arts during Writer's
Workshop. During this time, learners are able to express
ideas through creative writing, poetry, and non-fiction
genres just to name a few.
The students are able to use "real life" materials to
perform the various experiments in the Foss Science Series.
The experiments are very student-centered and open-ended.
The first graders are able to explore these topics in
as much depth as they are able and to relate these concepts
to their life experiences.
The First Grade also studies character development. Through
this, they learn and experience respect, responsibility,
friendship, cooperation, and perseverance through role
play, discussion and other activities.
We
are excited about the new Religious series that we are using
this year. Faith First helps introduce a number of religious
concepts in an exciting manner that is relevant to the children's
lives. Some of the topics we cover include:
Mass
The
Bible
God
as Creator
Jesus
shows God's love.
We
show God's love (love thy neighbor); First Graders attend
Mass twice a week. They have the opportunity to take part
in the ceremonies as well.
Basic
Math concepts are vital throughout the First Grade curriculum.
We use a hands-on approach that allows the children to explore
creative ways to work with math. The children are encouraged
to be creative problem solvers. Math is used in a variety
of situations including problem solving, reasoning, and
communication. Some of the main Math concepts covered include:
