Skills developed in the library include:

  1. Learn to respect and follow the rules in the library regarding the care of books
  2. Learn and utilize the Dewey Decimal system
  3. Locate materials using the library card catalog
  4. Understand and differentiate between fiction and non-fiction
  5. Learn and identify characteristics of common literary forms
  6. Learn how to choose fiction and other literature of personal interest and at appropriate developmental level
  7. Recognize and celebrate that award-winning books reflect literary and artistic excellence.
  8. Relate literature to personal experiences
  9. Compare their own interpretations of literature with those of others
  10. Appreciate materials that reflect diversity and diverse perspectives
  11. Recognize the importance of intellectual freedom and access to information necessary in a democratic society
  12. Search for information by subject, author and title
  13. Use an encyclopedia, dictionary, almanac, atlas and other reference materials
  14. Develop the students' ability to be a life-long learner by promoting the spirit of inquiry and teaching effective fact finding skills.

    The library at St. Maria Goretti maintains a collection of titles that support the Sacred Scripture performance goals of the Diocese of Madison Religious Education standards.
