Second Grade Curriculum

Second graders are starting to become independent thinkers. They express themselves more clearly with words, become more aware of themselves in relation to others and the world around them.

A List of second grade developmental skills:

  • Consideration of others
  • Cooperation when working in group situations
  • Development of positive social relationships
  • An interest in learning
  • Ability to take care of personal belongings
  • Ability to solve problems and work independently
  • Use self control
  • Ability to follow directions and understand rules

Reading/Language Arts

Reading and writing are the emphasis this year. We use a variety of comprehension strategies and word recognition including:

  1. Phonics skills
  2. Infer meaning of unfamiliar words by context
  3. Activate prior knowledge
  4. Prediction
  5. Self-correcting, rereading
    (Using Writer's Workshop we plan, revise, edit and publish creative writing.)
  6. Oral Language - Students participate in class discussions, present plays to peers and parents, Practice oral reading and partner reading, listen and comprehend oral communication.

    3. Communicate mathematical ideas in a variety of ways including numbers, words, symbols, graphs, tables and diagrams
  2. Number Operations and Relationships
    1. Grouping and counting (by 2's, 5's, 10's, 25's and 100's)
    2. Read write and order whole numbers to 1,000
    3. Recall basic facts of addition and subtraction
    4. Add and subtract 2 & 3 digit numbers with and without regrouping
  3. Geometry
    Name, compare, classify and sort two-dimensional figures
  4. Measurement
    1. Demonstrate understanding of units of measurement
    2. Tell time to 5 minute intervals
    3. Monetary value of dollars and cents to a total of $5.00

  2. Learn more about the Mass, Mary, special feasts of the year
  3. We have the opportunity to incorporate religion into our entire curriculum.
